Dr Sim: Shipment of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 Vaccines Arrives in Kuching to Boost Adolescent Vaccination Campaign | Malaysia
KUCHING, September 20 – A shipment of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine arrived last night at Kuching International Airport from Belgium to speed up Sarawak’s vaccination campaign for adolescents aged 12 to 17, said Datuk Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
According to the advisor to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, the last delivery of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to the state was on August 11.
Dr Sim, who is Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the latest shipment is timely given that Pfizer-BioNTech is the only vaccine approved by the National Drug Regulatory Agency (NPRA) of the Department of Health. Health (MoH) for people aged 12 to 17.
“We hope that JKNS (Sarawak Health Department) can reschedule the immunization schedule for people aged 12 to 15,” he said.
He pointed out that this age group made up 6.9% (or 192,800 people) of the state’s total population, based on data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
“Sarawak has a proven track record of deploying the National Covid-19 Vaccination Program (PICK) vaccines for adults. We were told to be the first to vaccinate 12 to 17 year olds in Malaysia.
“Let’s aim to be the first to receive the third dose and the booster dose next month (October) in Malaysia,” he said.
Dr Sim said that while Covid-19 vaccines may not be the only measure in Sarawak’s fight against Covid-19, scientific data has proven effective in reducing severe cases and deaths as well as reducing the rate of use of intensive care unit (ICU) beds and ventilators.
Despite this, he said the community still needed to take other public health measures and non-pharmaceutical interventions to live with the virus.
He added that it would also help ensure that our hospitals and health facilities are not overwhelmed by Covid-19 cases.
“Together, let’s fight against Covid-19. Protect yourself, protect everyone, ”he said. – Borneo Post
